UNIFORM INFORMATION

Why Dancers Wear Uniforms:

Equality: When everyone is wearing uniforms it helps to reinforce the idea that all students are equal. Having a standard dress code helps students feel a sense of teamwork. It encourages the fact that the dancing is the thing that is highlighted rather than the outfit.
Safety: Uniforms ensure clothing is safe and practical for dancing while allowing the dancer to move freely without any material restricting the movement. Improper clothing can impact technique, precision, ability to grip the floor, and visibility.
Distractions: Uniforms also eliminate any distractions about what others are wearing and help students to focus more in class.
Alignment: Uniforms enable teachers to see the alignment of students’ bodies while dancing, ensuring that students are developing proper technique.
Respect: When dancers wear the correct uniform it is a sign of respect to the teacher and studio. It tells the teacher that the student cares about the art form that the studio is dedicated to.
Dancing Mindset: Putting uniforms on in preparation for class puts students in a mindset for dancing. Just as we would put a bathing suit on to swim or a team uniform to play soccer, dance uniforms make students feel prepared and ready to dance.

Uniforms are never used to body-shame dancers or suggest that a student needs to conform to a particular identity. Dancers are welcome to wear tights and slippers that match their skin tone as well as wear both gender uniform options provided below.

Baby and Toddler Dance

No uniforms are required for Baby and Toddler dance except proper footwear. Shoes are not allowed on the studio flooring, so little ones can wear socks with grips on the bottom, ballet slippers, or go barefoot in class.

Pre-k Dance and Ballet 1

Boy's Uniform: Black leggings or sweatpants, plain white t-shirt, black or skin toned ballet slippers.

Girl's Uniform: Leotard with attached chiffon skirt (any solid color, any sleeve length with no decorations/jewels), soft pink or skin toned, footed tights, soft pink or skin toned slippers.

*No jewelry other than small earrings are allowed in class. Hair must always be tied back neatly out of the face and off of the neck before class starts. Short hair must be secured with a plain headband or hair clips. Students are welcome to wear either of the gender uniform options provided above.

Ballet 2 and 3

Boy's Uniform: Black leggings or sweatpants, plain white t-shirt, black or skin toned ballet slippers.

Girl's Uniform: Black leotard with any length sleeve or strap style (no skirt, decorations, or jewels) with soft pink or skin toned, footed tights, soft pink or skin toned slippers.

*Hair should always be secured back neatly out of the face. A bun is not required, but is recommended (it’s never too early to practice for the recital when a bun is required for long hair). Short hair must be secured neatly with a plain headband or hair clips. No jewelry other than small earrings are allowed in class. Students are welcome to wear either of the gender uniform options provided above.

Pre-Professional Program

The dancer's leotard should match the color of the level they've been placed in:

Purple Ballet = purple leotard

Teal Ballet = teal leotard

Burgundy Ballet = burgundy leotard

Navy Blue Ballet = navy blue leotard

*These leotards must be purchased directly through Brooklyn Dance Conservatory to ensure the correct shade and style.

Leotards should be worn with with soft pink or skin toned, footed tights and soft pink or skin toned slippers.

Boy's Uniform: Black ballet slippers, black sweatpants or leggings with a white t-shirt or a t-shirt matching the color of their level.

*Hair should always be secured back neatly out of the face. A bun is highly recommended. Short hair must be secured neatly with a plain headband or hair clips. No jewelry other than small earrings are allowed in class. Students are welcome to wear either of the gender uniform options provided above.

Modern/Lyrical

Boy's Uniform: Solid color sweatpants or leggings with a solid color, plain shirt, bare feet

Girl's Uniform: Any color leotard; soft pink, black, or skin toned transition tights (tights with a hole in the bottom of the foot so dancers can dance barefoot)

*No jewelry other than small earrings are allowed in class. Hair must always be tied back neatly out of the face and off of the neck before class starts. Short hair must be secured with a plain headband or hair clips. Students are welcome to wear either of the gender uniform options provided above.

Hip Hop

White soled, indoor-only sneakers and any comfortable clothing other than dresses may be worn for hip hop class. Please be aware that shoes which have previously been worn outside and cleaned, as well as shoes with any color sole will not be allowed. Thank you for your help in protecting our studio floors.

Tap Class

Girl's Uniform: Any color leotard with soft pink, black, or skin toned tights or black leggings, and black tap shoes.

Boy's Uniform: Any color plain t-shirt with black leggings, and black tap shoes.

*No jewelry other than small earrings are allowed in class. Hair must always be tied back neatly out of the face and off of the neck before class starts. Short hair must be secured with a plain headband or hair clips. Students are welcome to wear either of the gender uniform options provided above.

Hip Hop/Tap Combo Class

Students will need the footwear listed above for both hip hop and tap classes.

Students may wear the uniform for either tap or hip hop class.
